India Post has issued a revised set of guidelines regarding the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) scheme, aimed at streamlining mobile-based delivery operations. This initiative is especially beneficial for Postmen, GDS, and Outsourced Delivery Staff working in departmental offices or delivery centers who are not provided with smartphones by the Directorate or IPPB.

Revised Guidelines for BYOD Scheme for India Post Delivery Staff
Eligibility Criteria
- The scheme applies only to delivery staff (Postmen/GDS/Outsourced) not equipped with smartphones provided by the Department.
- The official departmental mobile app currently supports Android devices only.
- Only Android smartphones that meet the minimum specifications listed in Annexure-E will be considered eligible.
- These specifications may be updated from time to time depending on operational requirements.
Device Requirements
- Smartphones must be in good working condition — touchscreen and rear camera must function properly.
- Devices should be no more than 3 years old and must not be rooted.
- Basic device details like invoice (if available), make/model, and IMEI number must be recorded at the office level.
Reimbursement Details
Eligible delivery staff using their personal Android smartphones will receive:
- ₹300/month for smartphone usage
- ₹200/month for voice/data/SMS plans
- Total: ₹500/month, subject to usage conditions (explained below)
📌 Important: At least 90% of the articles received for delivery must be processed using the official departmental mobile app to qualify for reimbursement. No. of articles delivered by the delivery
staff may not be considered for reimbursement under BYOD scheme. lt has been
observed on multiple occasions that due to this misapprehension, reimbursement to
delivery staff who have opted for BYOD is not processed. Delivery staff as well as
supervisory staff may be sensitized for handling all accountable articles through mobile
app
SIM & Data Plan Responsibility
- Delivery staff must purchase SIM and data/voice/SMS plans themselves.
- Choose a mobile network provider based on strong coverage in the beat area.
Disclaimers & Liability
- The Department will not be liable for:
- Loss, theft, or damage to personal devices.
- Loss of any personal data or applications from the device itself
- The use of device thereof is the responsibility of the delivery staff who owns the device.
- No advance payment will be provided to buy smartphones under this scheme.
Payment Process
- Reimbursements will be processed monthly, as outlined in Annexure-D.
- In special cases (e.g., device repair, sanctioned leave), partial or full reimbursement may still be applicable:
- Formula for Partial Reimbursement:
- ₹300 × (days used ÷ working days in the month)
- ₹200 × (days used ÷ working days in the month)
- Full monthly reimbursement is allowed if:
- The employee delivers using the app at least once and proceeds on sanctioned leave, or
- The device was under repair for up to 2 working days, and a valid bill is submitted.
- Outsourced staff using their phones in the absence of departmental staff will also be eligible based on the same criteria.
Device Management
The Department may install Mobile Device Management (MDM) software on BYOD devices if required for monitoring and security.
Reporting & Recordkeeping
- Circle offices must report all enrolled devices every fortnight to the Mail Operations Division, using the format in Annexure-B.
- Consent from staff must be obtained in the format provided in Annexure-C.
